The California Healthy Families Program (HFP) was California's implementation of the federal Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which provided low-cost insurance that provided medical, dental, and vision coverage to uninsured children who did not qualify for Medi-Cal.
As a federal program, it was administered at the state level by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the California Managed Risk Health Insurance Board (MRMIB).
As a result of the 2012-2013 budget agreement, nearly 900,000 children will transition from HFP to Medi-Cal beginning in 2013.
